5 Design Tips for Spa Bathroom on a Budget

Updated: Oct 29, 2022

Our basic builder bathroom renovation needed to be completed on a budget, so we looked to optimize our design dollars by selecting a few essentials to create a spa-inspired bathroom on a budget.

To set the tone for any spa-like bathroom oasis you don't need a elaborate plan, you can actually just rely on your basic senses. Visual cues from soft natural colors set a serene mood, while metal and glass finishes give off luxury vibes. Simple aroma therapy salts and candles will delight the senses and decadent natural textiles, soft towels, and plush robes all work in harmony to calm and rejuvenate your body and mind.

Now, every good renovation starts with a scary before picture. I mean, did you even really renovate if you are not able to show where you started from? (the answer is most certainly no!) Our builder bathroom was what I liked to call the brown monster. Here she is in all her glory:

Now, lets get to the good stuff...

5 ways I optimized my budget and created a Spa Bathroom:

#1: Make a statement with an accent tile shower wall

After looking at every blue tile in a 50 mile radius, I found the perfect tile, the one that just spoke to me and conjured the perfect serene spa-like vibes I was looking for. It was the Oceano Alantico Polished Ceramic Tile. To make this 2x8 tile fit into our budget and to give it the most impact, I created a single statement wall in a herringbone pattern and surrounded it with an economical crisp white subway tile that had just the touch of movement to add more visual interest.

Drawing focus to one color and adding the impact of a classic pattern created a curated spa-like design and maximized my design budget. Additionally, by utilizing the crisp white tile everywhere else I was able to create a neutral background for the whole space.

#2: Make bathroom fixtures the jewels of your spa bathroom

I planned from the very beginning to allocate the largest portion of my renovation budget to high quality bathroom fixtures. These are from the Lura Collection by Speakman in Brushed Bronze. I knew I wanted to create a feeling of luxury in this space and I also wanted reliable fixtures that would remain durable overtime. The simple modern lines of the rainshower head, faucets, and handles created a timeless elegance that elevated the space.

"“Take a deep breath. Inhale peace. Exhale happiness.” – A.D. Posey.

Keep in mind that every budget decision has trade offs. When you remodel, you will need to make decisions based on your need and your preferences. For us, we wanted elegant fixtures that would stand up to every day use--because we would be using them EVERYDAY. Conversely, we decided to forgo the expense of ripping out the dated garden tub and adding one of those beautiful stand alone tubs. Yes, it would have given the room an elegant feel, however we really never use the tub and the thought of spending our budget on something we don't use was just ridiculous.

#3: Keep the other structural elements simple

Pick your essential spa-bathroom design element and then create a cohesive serene space by selecting simple, classic neutral backgrounds. We utilized the same white subway tile for the tub surround and then added classic shiplap to the walls complete the look. Concealed storage and minimal natural accessories also help create a ZEN spa bathroom design aesthetic and contribute to the spa-like feel in your bathroom oasis.

#4: Create sophistication and elegance by mixing metal finishes

Mixing metal finishes is an excellent way to elevate design and translates into the luxury feel you come to expect in a spa. Completing this look are the beautiful modern mixed metal clear globe light fixtures from Shades of Light.

#5: Pamper yourself with scented salts and spa supplies kept on display

So much about relaxation is scent. Spas have that wonderful kaleidoscope of aromatherapy scents and conjures relaxation instantly. You can create this with oils, inexpensive bath salts, and candles. To elevate our space and add the spa vibe, I added glass jars and natural baskets to contain and organize them.

Our bathroom renovation was a definitely a big undertaking and while it was still a considerable expense (bathrooms always are), I was able to maximize design dollars by making selections that gave the biggest impact for us while still achieving the serene spa-like bathroom makeover we now enjoy everyday.
