Charcuterie Board and Kitchen Accessories

I have been captivated by the etu’HOME designer charcuterie boards with their bold colors and crisp geometric lines for quite some time. These cheese boards and brightly colored cake stands and cookbook holders are the perfect accessory for both the kitchen and entertaining. However, since they are a bit pricey I and realized the best way to get them into my kitchen was to make then myself.

I turned an inexpensive cutting board, cake stand and domed glass dish into a designer dupe set with tape and paint. Follow these steps to create your own too!

Prepping your kitchen accessories for paint

I found these natural wood kitchen accessories at my local IKEA, Walmart, and HomeGoods. I did a bit bargain hunting and found a large IKEA cutting board and other wood kitchen accessories that did not have a painted finish. To prepare each of them for paint, I first removed all stickers, cleaning off any glue residue with a solvent. Then I sanded each piece with 180 grit sanding block, paying close attention to the areas that I intended to paint the geometric design. After completing the sanding process, I cleaned all the pieces with denatured alcohol to remove any sanding dust or oily residue.

Taping and Customizing Your Charcuterie Board or Kitchen Accessory Design

Now for the best part, adding your creative touch and designing your own pattern. You can use the etu'HOME designs as inspiration, as a template to duplicate, or a combination of both. I wanted to create long lines and a bold pattern with my charcuterie board, so I went with complex pattern on the long cutting board. To balance this design I went with simple large color blocking stripes on the cake stand and glass cheese dish.

Tape your design to your board. You can use a utility blade to trim and modify your stripe width.

The cutting board pattern consisted of three vertical stripes that were intersected with three additional stripes at the top of the board. This was a bit tricky, as pulling away the negative space became more challenging as I continued to add stripes. Luckily, its just tape and if you pull off the wrong piece, do not panic, you can just add a new piece back and keep moving forward.

Paint Your Cutting Board, Cake Stand, or Other Kitchen Accessory in Your Favorite Color

Once your design is taped and all the edges have been smoothed down you can paint directly onto your kitchen accessories. I have a passion for all things blue, so I selected my favorite navy blue color, Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore. For this project I used a cabinet grade paint to provide a tough and lasting finish. This paint is not food safe, so it needed to be sealed with a food safe paint before the first use. If you are creating kitchen accessories for home decor only, you can skip the food safe seal coat.

Paint your design and prepare to peel your tape while the paint is still wet.

Peel Your Tape While The Paint is Still Wet

After applying your paint, slowly pull up the edge of your paint and begin pulling away the tape. To get the crispest lines possible, you should peel your tape when the paint is still wet. Pulling the tape off of dry paint can leave rough edges as the pain breaks apart from the tape and your painted surface. If possible, pull your tape at a 45 degree angle and a slow, smooth and steady pace. Be careful to avoid touching the painted surface or allowing the tape to hit your project once the last bit has been removed.

For best results peel the tape at a 45 degree angle and before the paint has dried.

Seal Kitchen Accessories with a Food Safe Matte Paint

If you are using your designer dupe accessories for food they will need to be sealed with a water based food safe paint. Brands and options available differ from area to area. I recommend a review of the products in your area and confirming with the manufacturer that your selection is food safe.
